Proverbs 10:4 “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”
The Bible principle presented here is simple, yet profound. The man or woman who is lazy, undisciplined, and un-charactered in their manner of living will inevitably lead a life of poverty, want, and misery; while on the other hand, the individual who strives to do their work and accomplish their tasks with diligence, forethought, and effort will ultimately experience success in life. Proverbs 12:24 “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.”
An anonymous poet once remarked that, “Sitting still and wishing, makes no person great. The good Lord sends the fishing, but you must dig the bait.” There is much truth to this humorous thought, for the Bible is certainly clear that the LORD does not give hand-outs to his people (II Thessalonians 3:10). Instead, He provides each of us with opportunities to work and earn and save based upon the strengths and abilities which He has provided for us in life. When we are faithful to follow God’s plan, we can then expect to receive His blessings.
While it is true that God gives all of us opportunities in life, it is also true that many times we overlook these opportunities because we are trying to find an easier way or a more convenient route to travel. However, both the scriptures and human history teach us that here is no road which leads to success that does not encounter hard work along the way. The famous American inventor, Thomas Edison, said it this way, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
Let us determine to change our attitude towards work in the days ahead. Instead of constantly seeking to dodge work whenever possible; let us, instead, strive to be diligent in our work and view it as yet another way that we can bring honor and glory to our Lord!
